New Mexico Books & More Store 2004
The New Mexico Book Co-op, a coalition of over 200 small and independent book publishers and authors in New Mexico, operated the New Mexico Books & More store at Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque from Thanksgiving week through Christmas and New Year’s, 2005. Publishers and authors from Albuquerque, as well as from Los Ranchos, Santa Fe, Farmington, Las Cruces, Roswell, Carlsbad, Los Alamos, Taos, Corrales, Rio Rancho, Jemez Springs, Navajo, and even Pueblo (Colorado) participated in the store. Each publisher or author participating worked in the store handling sales and other aspects of running the store. The store showcased over 400 book titles and at least 50 other products made in New Mexico. The Co-op will have a book fair -- the New Mexico Book Fiesta -- in Cottonwood Mall on Saturday, May 7, 2005 and will showcase hundreds of New Mexico books. There will be between 120 and 150 booths with New Mexico authors and publishers. The New Mexico Book Co-op was created and organized by Barbe Awalt and Paul Rhetts of LPD Press of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque as a way to showcase local books and products that may not ordinarily get into mainstream bookstores or gift shops. The New Mexico Book Association is a co-sponsor of the monthly meetings which are held in Albuquerque. The Co-op will not have any administrative costs. Profits from the Co-op will be donated to various literacy programs in the state and as seed money for future book events sponsored by the Co-op.
